City of Aliso Viejo Work, Live and Play in a Beautiful Community…
Aliso Viejo provides for a balance between projected jobs and projected residential workforce. It was designed to make it possible to live, work and play in the same community.
The Mexican land grant (1841) named a station in the area, Cañada de los Alisos from which the developer, The Mission Viejo Company, named the City of Aliso Viejo. In Spanish, Aliso Viejo means “old alder” which is appropriate as alder trees still grow in the bed of the creeks that run through the City. The Spanish influence is apparent throughout the community in the naming of streets, creeks, communities, and parks.
HISTORY of ALISO VIEJO
The Mexican government originally granted the land, now known as Mission Viejo, to Juan Avila in 1842. In 1890 the Moulton family took title to 22,000 acres out of which the Mission Viejo Company purchased 6,600 acres in 1976 for California’s first master- planned community. That development is now part of Aliso Viejo. Aliso Viejo became Orange County's 34th city on July 1, 2001. This planned community was targeted to middle and upper-middle income homebuyers who clamored for the homes, condos, and apartments which developers could not build fast enough. Designed to make it possible to live, work and play in the same community, Aliso Viejo continues to grow and prosper even today.
Early settlers enjoyed a period of great prosperity and following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and petitioned in 1850 to become the 31st state in the union.
RECREATION IN ALISO VIEJO
Aliso Viejo can boast of its 23 parks and over 25 classes and leagues offered at public schools, local parks, and private businesses for children and adults. Annual community events include the 4th of July Picnic & Concert at Grand Park, Easter Egg Hunt & Pancake Breakfast at Grand Park, Santa's Arrival & Tree Lighting Ceremony, and the Summer Concert Series at Town Center.
The 3,400-acre Aliso and Wood Canyons Regional Park is contiguous with three sides of Aliso Viejo.
