City of Buena Park City Hall History of Buena Park The history of Buena Park was inauspicious. No one could know that this once humble Rancho would grow into America’s third largest entertainment Mecca known as the E-Zone. As was common in southern California during the days of foreign rule, the Spanish King gave permission to the local governor to convey land to those who acted in the interest of the government. In 1783 Governor Pedro Fages made one such grant to Manuel Nieto who served as a corporal of the “Leather Jacket”, or light cavalry guards of the Portola Expedition. The boundaries of this grant were the San Gabriel River and the Santa Ana River on the north and south, with the Pacific Ocean serving as the natural western boundary and the road from the San Gabriel Mission as the eastern boundary. In 1834 Manuel Nieto's heirs divided the land into five ranchos, one of which was named Rancho Los Coyotes and totaled more than 48, 000 acres. It is the center of this rancho on which Buena Park is located that pivotal moments in the Mexican War (1846 – 1848) took place. In January 1847, Commodore Robert S. Stockton and his band of Americans prepared for the battle of the San Gabriel River, in which they emerged the victors. The exact location of the encampment bears a historical marker near the Los Coyotes Country Club in the Bellehurst area of Buena Park. In 1885 James A. Whitaker purchased 690 acres from Abel Stearns who had acquired it from Pio and Adres Pico, heirs of Manuel Nieto, in consideration of loans. Whitaker officially founded the City of Buena Park in 1887 in anticipation of the development of the railway, but the city was not incorporated until 1953. The Name of Buena Park Early Economy Walter and Cordelia Knott arrived in 1920 and began farming a 10-acre parcel of land rented from Samuel Coughran. A neighbor, amateur horticulturist Rudolph Boysen, piqued Walter’s interest in berry grafting and together they developed a delicious new berry in 1932 – the Boysenberry. The hybrid was the result of crossing the blackberry, the red raspberry and the loganberry. The Knott family decided to erect a stand and sell the fresh berries, plants, and preserves made from the berries to travelers on Highway 39 (Beach Blvd.), that was the main road from the beach to Los Angeles. Cordelia then decided to cater to the hungry travelers with chicken dinners and served the first customers on her wedding china in 1934 for 65 cents each. Walter began assembling his Ghost Town attraction in 1940 to provide waiting diners with a diversion. Today, Knott’s Berry Farm is the single largest revenue producer for the city. There are plenty of other attractions in the Entertainment Zone of Buena Park, however, (called the E-Zone for short) such as, Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament, Movieland Wax Museum, Ripley's "Believe It or Not!" Museum, and Knott's Soak City U.S.A. There will always be new and exciting things happening along the Buena Park E-Zone. Whether for business or pleasure Buena Park is too good to pass up!
