P.O. Box 1200 Costa Mesa, CA 92628-1200 (800) 399-5499 or (714) 384-0493 The inviting Southern California climate is invigorating and provides a perfect compliment to the vast range of relaxing activities available in Costa Mesa. This area feeds the passions of those who play tennis or golf, enjoy strolling the beach, or sailing into a beautiful Pacific sunset. The ideal climate allows residents and visitors to take full advantage of surrounding mountains and beaches, the high and low deserts, out door theme parks and sports arenas. Costa Mesa, being in proximity to Newport Beach, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Santa Ana, is a wonderful place to live and work.
Native Americans established a village called “Lukup” on these bluffs long before Spanish explorers arrived in 1769. It was then that Jose Antoino Yorba, a soldier with the Portola expedition, first saw the area now known as Orange County. In 1810, Rancho Santiago Del Santa Ana was granted to Yorba and his nephew, Juan Pablo Peralta. At this time cattle belonging to the Mission San Juan Capistrano padres grazed the area and were tended by vaqueros. Beginning in 1868 and lasting throughout the century, the Rancho Santiago del Santa Ana was partitioned and subdivided several times with parcels being sold off by the heirs of Jose Antonio Yorba. During this period the railroad brought new prosperity to the area, which saw construction of a hotel to house people who came to the area for treatments in the hot sulfur springs nearby, as well as construction of a school, church and other commercial enterprises. Apple orchards flourished in the area and were grown along with sweet potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and strawberries. When a storm washed out the railroad in early 1889, the town suffered financial disaster due to the loss of commercial revenue and soon reverted to a primarily agricultural economy. This little town, then known as Harper, and named after an area rancher, grew again alongside the Santa Ana and Newport Railroad. When oil was discovered in 1909 new business and more residents flocked to the area. Ozmen’s General Store and the city’s first post office were established in 1909. In 1920 the town was renamed Costa Mesa, which means coastal tableland in Spanish, and it continued to flourish as an agricultural community. The City was incorporated on June 29, 1953 and today encompasses 17 square miles with a population that exceeds 90,000. Modern Costa Mesa is a major commercial and industrial center of Orange County. The City, which formally adopted the slogan "The City of the Arts in late 1984, is home to a regional symphony orchestra, the South Coast Repertory Theater, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center which includes a 3,000 seat facility. City amenities include 26 parks, a municipal golf course, 26 public schools and 2 libraries. In addition Costa Mesa is the home of Orange Coast College and Vanguard University as well as Whittier Law School and National University. If these don’t meet your needs a number of universities and colleges are in close proximity.
