Come stay for the day, a week or longer, be our guest and enjoy what author Richard Henry Dana Jr. called, “the most romantic spot on the California Coast”.

The History of the City of Dana Point

The bay was originally named Bahia de San Juan Capistrano, which is Spanish for San Juan Capistrano Bay, but the 1884 US Coastal Survey applied the name Dana to the triangulation point along the coastal area and soon the name was applied to the entire community.

The name, Dana Point was derived from the name of author Richard Henry Dana Jr. who wrote the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast, in1840. A trading ship, Pilgrim, anchored in the area when it came here via Africa’s Cape Horn from Boston looking for hides to take back to shoe factories in New England.

Prior to the mooring of Pilgrim, other ships also visited Bahia de San Juan Capistrano. In 1818 the Argentinean Pirate, Hipolito Bouchard, docked his fleet of pirate ships in the cove while his sailors raided Mission San Juan Capistrano. This event is commemorated with a reenactment at the Pirate Festival held in Dana Point each year.

Today in Dana Point

Currently there is another type of seafarer that traverses the bay just off of the coast. Dana Point Harbor is the official "Whale Watching Capital of the West". Each year California Gray Whales migrate from their cold Arctic home to winter over in the warm southern waters of Baja. The whales closely follow the coastal outline and seem to use Dana Point is a "landmark" on their journey. It is here that pods of giant whales join together and cavort just off shore making it easy to observe and take photos of these fascinating creatures.

The area encompasses nearly seven miles of coastal bluffs and gently rolling hills that follows the Pacific Coastline. The harbor, nestled within the cove, hosts over 2, 500 boats and provides many services catering to sport fishing, whale watching, walking, bicycling, and many of other recreational activities. It also provides access to Doheny State Park, a popular beach facility. The State Park offers camping, picnicking, swimming, surfing, bicycling, tide pool exploration and more. The area is also home to the Orange County Marine Institute, a nationally recognized research and teaching facility dedicated to the protection of the marine environment.

The first subdivision, San Juan Point, opened in 1924 with the rest of the town laid out after the original plan which called for a Spanish styled town with wide streets named after ship lanterns which can be seen in the names of some of the streets such as Street of the Golden Lantern, and Street of the Blue Lantern.
